About University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame du Lac, or Notre Dame for short, is a private Catholic research university located in Notre Dame, which is an unincorporated community located northeast of South Bend, in St Joseph County, in the US state of Indiana. Due to the fact that Notre Dame is an unincorporated community the location of Notre Dame's campus is more commonly associated with South Bend.


Notre Dame University was founded by Father Edward Sorin, CSC, on November 26, 1842, as an all-male institution, on a land which was donated by the Bishop of Vincennes. The university first started to enroll women in 1972, and today, approximately 47% of the student body being female.


Notre Dame University is academically organized into 5 colleges and one professional school, through which it offers its students both undergraduate and graduate degrees in various fields of study, its undergraduate program being ranked 20th among national universities, by the U.S. News & World Report.


The University of Notre Dame has been highly ranked by significant magazines, several times, over the years, including by The Washington Monthly, which ranked it 13th among national universities and ARCHITECT Magazine, which placed its undergraduate architectural program on the 12th place, nationally. The Princeton Review ranked the Law School 18th, while BusinessWeek ranked Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business undergraduate school as 1st overall.


The athletic tams from the University of Notre Dame are known as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who compete in the NCAA Division I, in 26 varsity sports, 13 men's and 13 women's, 21 of the teams competing in the Big East Conference, the Fighting Irish also competing in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, for hockey and the Great Western Lacrosse League, for men's lacrosse.


The football team, which is Independent, meaning that it is not part of the NCAA, has a long history, during which the Fighting Irish have experienced victory many times. The basketball team also brought home many titles, more exactly over 1600 wins, making Notre Dame one of the only 12 educational institutions that have reached that mark, having 28 appearances in the NCAA tournaments.


Since it first opened its doors to students, the University of Notre Dame has produced thousands of notable alumni, among the most resonant names from the list being: Edward Malloy - 16th president of Notre Dame, John Murphy - Inventor of ARCnet, the first LAN, Brian Moynihan - Current CEO of Bank of America, George Wendt (did not graduate) actor, best known as Norm from Cheers, Nicholas Sparks - Author best known for novels A Walk to Remember and The Notebook, as well as many other great people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
